Experience & Capabilities

The AACT is well equipped to undertake phase II-IV trials in a number of therapeutic areas and has:

  • the strongest track record globally in trials of the treatment of diabetes, serving as either the international or regional coordinating center in the two largest diabetes trials ever undertaken, ADVANCE* and ACCORD*.
  • substantial clinical trial experience in blood pressure-lowering treatments, having led a number of pivotal trials, and hosting the secretariat of the Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists' Collaboration, an initiative that involves all of the recent large scale trials of blood pressure-lowering interventions.
  • major experience in the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke, and the treatment of renal disease, heart failure, and dyslipidemia. In addition, one of the partners also leads a large international network that conducts clinical trials on treatments for participants infected with HIV.
  • experience in both large-scale morbidity and mortality trials, and in smaller scale trials of a variety of disease outcomes and processes. AACT has a particularly strong track record in vascular imaging, having conducted some of the largest trials of the effects of both statins and ACE inhibitors on carotid intima-media thickness.
  • substantial expertise in project management, data management, software development, biostatistics and scientific data analyses. In addition, the senior members of the Alliance have expertise in clinical drug development and associated regulatory issues, having advised major pharmaceutical companies and regulatory authorities worldwide.
  • developed state-of-the-art web and fax-based trial management systems that are FDA compliant and compatible with a range of in-house data bases such as Oracle Clinical™. The AACT proprietary web-based trial management system has been tested in clinical trials involving 20,000 patients and has been shown to be reliable, efficient and user-friendly in a range of research settings from ambulatory care to critical care and from North America to Asia. The AACT system can utilize a variety of languages, and is available in character-based texts such as Chinese and Japanese.
